Sylvia Bendzsa is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with a BFA in Fine Art. Previously she studied at Memorial University, Ohio University and the Ontario College of Art. A transplant to Newfoundland, she moved here in the ‘70’s and is actively involved in the art scene in St. John’s.
For many years her primary interest has been printmaking, and she is proficient in all mediums but still prefers intaglio etching. She has been an active member of St. Michael’s Printshop since 1978, where she has been a Board Member for many years and Chairperson and Coordinator (1986-88). St. Michael’s is an artist-run professional facility for printmaking. She also works in paint and watercolour and is known for her street scenes of St. John’s.
Her work is seen in numerous exhibitions and is in private and public collections such as The Province of Newfoundland, Government House Province of Newfoundland, Government of Canada Art Bank, The Salt Fish Corporation, and Memorial University Art Gallery now the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Labatt Breweries Ltd. and St. Michael’s Printshop Archives.
She has had solo shows at: Struts, Sackville, N.B.: Platform, Victoriaville, P.Q.: Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John’s: The Art Centre, Banff, AB.: Anna Leonwens Gallery, Halifax, N.S.: and RCA, LSPU Hall St. John’s.
